Repurposing: Turn Your Trash Into Treasure

Article Pic

HEATHER THOMAS: Repurposing is the modification of something to be used for a purpose other than its original intended use. Repurposing is another alternative beyond the already familiar common recycling practices for aluminum, metal, glass, plastic, paper, and cardboard.

Both Recycling and Repurposing reduce the consumption of raw materials, energy usage, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution. The more we reuse and recycle, the less we contribute to landfills.

When it comes to repurposing the possibilities are endless. Let creativity be your inspiration. Before you carry that unused bookcase out to the curb, consider turning it into a pantry closet by adding some old shutters to the front. With some basic tools and a little creativity, you can repurpose both the bookcase and the shutters to make a useful and decorative pantry closet.

If you feel more comfortable with a needle and thread than with a saw, hammer, and nails you can repurpose some old socks into anything from pet toys to potpourri holders.

If you're not comfortable navigating through a home improvement store, don't get discouraged. Repurposing can be something as simple as using your bath towels instead of packing peanuts for your next move, or using an old roman shade as a stylish and simple room divider.

Repurposing is a great way to reduce our consumption of 'stuff'. The Story of Stuff; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GorqroigqM&feature=youtu.be an eye-opening video, is an account of how much we consume, where it comes from and where it goes. Understanding the big picture will hopefully raise awareness for recycling and create a desire for repurposing.

We all share one Earth, and we are all responsible for its health. Take a second look at something to see if there is another use for it before you put it out with the trash. And help inspire others by sharing your favourite repurposing ideas and projects!
