Proud to be 'Green'

HEATHER THOMAS: It's easier to have strength in your convictions when your convictions are in sync with those of the majority. The challenge arises when it's time for you to stand by beliefs that appear to be slightly unpopular. Despite the heightened global awareness of environmental issues, unusual weather patterns, and natural disasters, being 'Green' may have become trendy but is not always common.

If you want to do your part, then it's up to you to become well informed and courageous enough to act. Everywhere you look people are still using plastic shopping bags, disposable paper & plastic dinnerware or cleaning products filled with toxic chemicals. Unfortunately, society has created the belief that the better way is the faster way; and the majority of people are looking for a 'quick fix'. The modern family often wants to cram as much into one day as possible so they have adopted the mantra of "Faster, easier and more convenient". Sometimes the decisions we make in order to get the job done faster, result in products or actions that could be harmful to the environment.

So why do people choose convenience over environmental consciousness? Several reasons: it's easier, everyone else is doing it, and the options are more common. But strength comes into play when making the choices that take a little extra time and effort, but leave a lasting impression in protecting the planet, like carrying those reusable bags into the store with you; washing a dish or utensil instead of throwing away another paper plate or plastic fork; or taking the time to learn about earth-friendly cleaning products or even making your own!

Lack of information is another reason people tend to shy away from taking environmental action because, unless you live in a rainforest or jungle, it may be difficult to comprehend the devastation of deforestation and its impact on both the environment and wildlife. If you strongly believe that your actions can help, then take the time to do your homework. Read and research organizations where you could contribute your time, energy or financial resources. Out of sight does not need to be out of mind.

Are you strong enough to stand behind your convictions?

When it comes to being 'Green', be proud and take a stand. It really is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. If you are confident that every little bit counts, then take action regardless of what other people think.

2. Put in the extra effort rather than taking the easy way out.

3. Use your strength and stand behind a movement to raise environmental awareness and contribute to the betterment of life on Earth.
