A Foretelling

Article Pic

HEATHER THOMAS: Originally published in 1971, the Dr. Seuss story The Lorax, was clearly a foretelling of the detrimental effects of industrialization on the Earth's natural resources.

This colourful children's book illustrated the importance of conservation and a balanced ecosystem. Unfortunately, this classic story was read by many as a fairy tale instead of being recognized as a harsh reality. Some of the children entertained by this book have become the adults responsible for deforestation and disregard of the planet. Others, subconsciously touched by its message, inspired to make conscious Earth-friendly decisions.

In the story, the words are clear and the message direct. The Once-ler takes advantage of the natural resources, Truffula Trees, and uses them to make Thneeds that he quickly begins to sell. Once he realizes the profit potential of his invention he expands his company, and in the process cuts down all of the Truffula Trees in the forest in order to obtain the raw materials he needs for production. In doing so, he destroys the food source and habitat of the forest animals as well as pollutes both the air and water supply with the waste products from the factory. He continued on this path of greed despite the constant warnings of the Lorax, who speaks on behalf of the trees and the animal. Once all of the animals indigenous to the area are forced to leave, and the trees are gone, his Thneed production is forced to cease. With his source of income now gone, so are his workers (family) and he's left alone. Before the Lorax disappeared, he left one final message behind, the word UNLESS spelled out in rocks.

UNLESS someone cares, things will never get better. UNLESS we each take on a personal responsibility we will allow our environment to reap the negative effects of deforestation and pollution. UNLESS we stop pretending that modern conveniences are more important than respect and value for the environment and its natural resources we will be no better than the greedy Once-ler and his family. It is time we recognize the power of our choices. When you are standing in front of a shelf in the grocery store, do you have any knowledge of the manufacturing processes involved in making your favourite products? If you educated yourself, you may choose differently.

If you did not have the pleasure of reading this story as a child, it is never too late. Regardless how you receive the message of this book, it is undeniable that greed and industrialization are a global concern for the planet if left unchecked.

Unfortunately, because of perpetual disregard, we have already depleted so many resources. It is now a critical time of change. Green companies are becoming more prevalent and vocal about their methods and modifications in order to protect the environment and conserve resources. Global-consciousness is definitely shifting towards more personal responsibility for our planet. Do your part!
