HEATHER THOMAS: We deem many things 'modern conveniences' because they speed up our processes and add efficiencies to our busy lives. However, while we race through one day to get to the next, it's easy to either overlook, or completely disregard the effects our choices have on the environment. |
With the constant barrage of signs from the universe, it is becoming more evident that it is up to each of us to stop the flagrant abuse of our planet and its natural resources. Answering 'Yes' or 'No' to the following questions will help you determine the level of your environmental awareness, as well as suggest environmentally friendly alternatives to some common behaviours. 1) Do you use disposable plates, napkins and cutlery in order to save time on party cleanup instead of reusable products such as cloth napkins, silverware and ceramic plates? 2) Do you choose paper or plastic bags at the grocery store, instead of bringing your own reusable shopping bags? (Some stores even offer a reusable bag cash refund.) 3) Do you run your washing machine or dishwasher when you have the time, instead of when the loads are full, to conserve water? 4) Do you replace burnt out light bulbs with standard bulbs because they are less expensive, rather than the more efficient CFL bulbs, which last longer and save you money in the end? 5) Do you still use your tried and true chemical-filled cleaning products, instead of more natural products that have removed the harsh chemicals and pollutants or even earth-friendly household alternatives like vinegar & baking soda? If you answered 'Yes' to any of the above questions, you have opportunities to make additional small changes in your daily habits that will ultimately have a large impact on protecting the environment. It is never too late to start making change, one-step at a time. If you answered 'No' to ALL of the above questions, thank you for your contribution to protecting the environment! Nevertheless, don't forget to continue to find ways you can protect the environment, as well as spread the word. The best teacher is leading by example! |
