The Ancient Art of Composting

Article Pic

HEATHER THOMAS: Trash is an unlikely topic of conversation around most dinner tables, but definitely something worth raising to a higher level of awareness. Like it or not, producing waste is an inevitable and undeniable part of our lives, but what we do with that waste is something we can control.

The next step beyond the usual recycling of paper, plastic, glass, aluminium, and consumer electronics is composting . This is an environmentally friendly way to reduce the amount of yard and food waste that enters landfills or is incinerated.

The ancient art of composting has been documented as early as AD 23-79, and modernized in 1920's Europe when it began being used in organic farming. Depending on the process, compost can take between 2 weeks and 12 months to produce the finished material. Decomposition occurs with the right mix of Air + Water + Carbon + Nitrogen. Whether you start your compost in a bin or just a pile in the yard, you will be creating biological, chemical and physical benefits to soil.

Some of the benefits include:
~ Reducing soil erosion by decreasing the bulk density and improving soil porosity
~ Improving soil structure to create a better root environment
~ Providing nutrients and beneficial micro-organisms which suppress plant diseases
~ Stabilizing pH levels
~ Creating more efficient absorption, reducing frequency of irrigation

What starts as a pile of grass clippings, can become a great organic fertilizer. Beginning a compost pile will be less intimidating once you equip yourself with information. There are many websites providing easy to follow instructions on how to start your own backyard compost.

Here are a couple of links to help get you started.

It is our personal responsibility to gather information and become more Earth-Conscious. Turn your trash into an Environmental Treasure.
