Raising London: A Professional and a Puppy

Chug puppy standing on hind legs in back of carGRACE STE. CROIX: Amber Kelsey is always busy. The life of an event planner is constantly full of surprises. From weddings to corporate events, Amber’s day to day life involves a lot of organization, compromise and work. As a twenty something professional with a large social circle and a busy job, time is something that is very precious. However, time management became even more important one day when she received her favourite gift, London.

One summer afternoon, a very special someone gave Amber a 'just because' gift. After work, Amber was introduced to a small but adorable little puppy. Affectionately known as a 'chug' - this chihuahua/pug mix was from a reputable breeder. As Amber held her little dog for the first time, the chug snuggled into her arms as if she had an instant trust for Amber. She immediately named the pup 'London', after the city she had enjoyed visiting just a year before.

London immediately lived up to her namesake, the hustling and bustling capital city. This was the first dog that Amber had independently owned and she was determined to make it work. After cuddling with this precious sweet pup the first night, Amber received a quick wakeup call in the early hours of the morning to play. Amber realized that this adorable puppy had endless energy and was living up to her name a little too much, as London was obviously observing Greenwich time instead of Eastern Standard!

Many professionals think about getting a dog. The companionship and love of any pet is something to be desired. However, with a busy schedule, people fear having a new pet. When Amber received London, she was determined to find a balance. With a sense of humour and a big heart, Amber learned that London the chug brings so much joy to others and is the perfect pet, but this does not come without lessons.

Amber knew that some Chihuahuas are known for choosing only one human and sticking to them, not wanting to be close with anyone else. With Amber’s active social and professional life, it is important for this puppy to feel comfortable with other people. Amber immediately started socializing London with others. London quickly learned that children were a great enjoyment, because only they could match her energy. She started to love the fact that other people could give her attention too and soon became a very social dog. She had loyalty to Amber as her guardian but would show affection to any of Amber’s guests.

All guardians who live an active lifestyle should surround themselves with a group of friends and family who can mind their dog in case of an emergency. Since Amber’s family and friends are pet friendly people, she felt at ease leaving this young puppy in the care of her parents, so she would not be lonely when Amber went out for a few hours to run errands.

Upset and angry at Amber for leaving, little London ran up the stairs and did her business all over her parent’s beautiful duvet blanket. Proud of herself, London felt as though she could punish Amber for leaving. When Amber received a message from her parents about London’s mishap, Amber made sure that she immediately put London into training so she stopped acting out and understood her place in this new family.

As pack animals, dogs must know where they belong in a family and what is expected of them. Whether it is playing with children or guarding the house, a dog must know where they belong and bad behaviours must be changed immediately.

Amber heeded the commandments of a dog owner: A dog must know where they are in a family. You have other people in your life, but generally a dog only has you. She had to build trust between her parents and London. After a few short weeks, even Amber’s wary father embraced the pup. The two are inseparable today.

London is now becoming a lady. Amber notes she has a keen sense of awareness. From a bad day at work to a wonderful day off, London’s reacts to the ups and downs of her surroundings. She is a comfort after a busy day and a playful companion to have when running errands.

Amber does not miss the days that she found her shoes being chewed on or when she as picking up from all of the accidents. She says that despite a busy schedule, she makes sure that she spends a lot of time with growing London and surrounds her with a loving group of family and friends.

It is possible for the busy person to have a pet. The love and excitement London brings to Amber's circle is priceless. Though puppies take a lot of patience and work, they bring so much joy and laughter. As Amber can attest, London is still the best gift she ever received.
