New products and services for animals are becoming mainstream. Because of advanced technology and some bright ideas from veterinarians and companies, many pets will not have to take their last step. It is actually their first leap into a second life! Everyone deserves a second chance and there are many products and services available to get our pets running again. Pet wheel chairs, splints and even the newest 'bionic legs' are quickly becoming the norm to save our pets from a much harsher life or facing euthanasia. The beauty of helping these pets is that they are persistent in learning how to use the new apparatus; they adjust quickly and live a fuller life.
Wheelchairs
Wheelchairs are a great asset to any pet owner whose animal has become paraplegic. It is also an option for those who have lost a limb. Pet wheel chairs have been in the public for over thirty years but are now becoming an easy option over euthanasia for a pet. Both cats and dogs adapt to wheelchairs. Paralyzed or obese pets take along period of time for adjustment than animals who are more active, but are missing limbs. One does not have to be extremely wealthy to give his or her pet a second chance. Families can buy their pets a new wheelchair or second hand are often available on major used trading websites.
Wheel chairs are a great choice for animals that still have the yearning to be physically active. A pet must have a strong use of his or her front paws in order to be assessed for wheelchair use and there are mnay options depending on the immobility of your pet. With the chairs pets can walk or run on solid ground or terrain. An animal that couldn't can now chase his favorite ball or follow his family almost anywhere! By propping a pillow to your pets chin, a dog or cat can easily relax after a long days run.
Braces
It may sound like something out of a science fiction movie but technology has taken a huge advancement to help our pets in need. Prosthetics are available for pets that have lost more then one limb (losing just one limb for most pets usually does not impair their ability to walk or run). Playfully called 'bionic legs', pets who have suffered from frost bite or loss of paws are possible candidates to receive a 'bionic paw or leg' that will aid in their everyday walking and running. Pets with this treatment are able to walk or run on terrain or solid ground. It is recommended for pets that are physically active and have a calm disposition. A calm pet is easier to train with the new leg attachments then an easily frustrated pet. This newer technology is expensive, in the low thousands of dollars. However, as time passes it should be cheaper as each company develops more cliental and this form of procedure becomes more mainstream.
Implants
Implants are also a brand new technology for animals that have lost their legs. A surgical procedure inserts titanium prosthesis into the remaining area of the animal's leg. The prosthesis is connected to the animal's leg bone and has sensors to measure the force used on the leg. Though this procedure is relatively new, it is a leap towards an advanced form of animal care.
Devotion, undying love and a zest for living are three key traits that we as people must never lose. When an accident occurs to our pets, it can be devastating to the family, however with more options available to the general public we can allow our animals to live a more comfortable, longer life. We can also admire the persistence of our pets to strive to live life to its fullest, no matter what the obstacles. We believe that we teach our pets so much, from house training to manners, but what they offer to us is so much more. We learn from our furry companions that there is always a silver lining to every cloud, or for many pets a 'titanium' one.
