They speak to our true selves, our deepest yearnings and desires, our divinity and our purpose. They are often the very heart and soul of our being.
Our dreams often evolve in stages. They may begin as a quiet thought or nudge from within, slowly getting stronger over time until we reach the point where we begin to take action to see our dream come alive. Very often, we are so engaged in our dream, so passionate in our pursuit, that we will do anything to realize our dream.
I have been in pursuit of a few of my own life dreams in recent weeks and months and was somewhat surprised recently to be asked, "Heather, when are you going to give up?" It's an unimaginable question for me and for many others I imagine but one that I did give some thought to. One only need consider a few examples of those who did not give up on their dream either to realize the simple truth that dreams take time to come to fruition. We only need to keep ourselves moving in the direction to meet them, which we eventually will.
Consider the fact that Thomas Edison toiled for years at a number of inventions, overcoming a number of obstacles and challenges in his way, to become known as the inventor of the modern day light-bulb and founder of General Electric. He had a vision of what he wished to create and kept going until he had created a functional light bulb and the technologies to supports its use. And we certainly appreciate his efforts don't we? Never did he give up on his dream.
Well-known culinary guru Julia Child spent years testing recipes and writing the manuscript of her infamous cookbook, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", only to have her first version rejected by publishers. She then re-wrote the entire 524 page book to finally get it published more than 8 years after she first began working on it. It has gone on to become one of the world's most renowned culinary tomes. Never did she give up on her dream.
Susan Boyle is another figure to keep my mind when thinking of the kind of tenacity required to achieve your dream. As a young child she'd always dreamed of singing on stage yet faced a number of challenges that stood in her way. She held onto her dream and at age 47, Susan stepped onto the stage of Britain's Got Talent in front of an unsupportive audience and shocked the world with her angelic version of 'I Dreamed a Dream'. She has since gone on to a very successful music career and fulfillment of other life dreams. She is one who didn't give up on her dream either.
Dreams simply take time. We must continue to take steps in their direction and perhaps keep in mind the examples and lessons of those who went before us. We will encounter obstacles. We will have challenges. We will stumble along the way. We may get impatient. I only hope that if someday you are asked the question, "When are you going to give up?" that your response is the same as mine and the same as the dreamers who have gone before us ~ Never.
