We all frequently hear of the benefits that managing common lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep and stress can have on our health. There is another area of our lives however, which gets less attention but which is just as critical to our health and it is our attitude.
What is attitude? Attitude is a mental position relative to your way of thinking or being; an inclination towards that which you believe. Keeping a positive attitude helps to you be in an optimistic, hopeful state of mind most of the time.
Life can be busy and stressful and it doesn't always go according to our plans. Not only can we fall victim to external circumstances, our own internal dialogue can often be so negative that it can be our biggest enemy. How we respond to life's events or hassles as well as our own thoughts can dramatically impact our well-being.
Research has demonstrated that attitude can be a stronger predictor of future health than traditional risk factors such as diet, exercise, smoking and genetics. A positive attitude and positive state of being are known to have many favourable benefits to your health.
You can live longer and be healthier and happier with a positive attitude towards life. In addition, you are more likely to be successful, have increased energy and experience a greater level of peace and calm.
When you can see the bright side of life, your whole life experience will change. Individuals who foster a positive attitude report increased feelings of optimism and motivation, creative thinking, self-confidence and overall happiness. They believe in themselves and their abilities and won't give up on their goals. They see opportunities, recognize the value and blessings in failure and look for solutions. They live proactively. They feel inspired and they also inspire others by their example.
How can you start boosting your health by boosting your attitude? Having a positive attitude isn't just about thinking good thoughts. It's about being committed, taking action and keeping engaged in activities that will build your positive muscles. Here are a few ideas to help get you started:
Eat a healthy diet.
Get your exercise and plenty of sleep and learn to manage your stress. These will help you maintain a positive mindset by ensuring that you're maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
Learn to manage your thinking.
Being mindful of your internal dialogue will help you recognize thought patterns and how they may be affecting the way you handle daily living. Not only do we need to be mindful of the negativity around us, in others, news and television, much of our internal dialogue can be negative. Thoughts such "I could never do that!" or "What if I fail?" are common themes. Ask yourself if these thoughts are really true and whether there is another way you can view the situation.
Surround yourself with other positive people.
Individuals who have stronger social connections generally live longer. However, choose your friends wisely and be sure to spend time with those individuals who leave you with a 'feel good' feeling.
Set goals for yourself and continually take steps to achieve them.
Goals will help keep you motivated and feeling inspired as you reach them. Whatever your goal, develop a realistic plan to help you achieve it and then put it into action. You will feel great once you reach your finish line! Live your dreams.
Why not create a life goals or dream list of larger items that you'd really love to do in life such as climbing a mountain, swimming with dolphins or taking a balloon ride. Working through your list will keep you feeling positive, happy, fulfilled and engaged in life. Get outside the box.
It can be easy to get lulled into the complacency and patterns of daily living. After a while this can lead to feelings of boredom and dissatisfaction. Keep yourself feeling upbeat by changing up your routine once in a while, which can also help change your perspective and refresh your battery.
Help others.
Nothing helps you as much as helping others. Help contribute to the lives of others by helping them achieve their goals, volunteering or lending an ear. Spending time helping to make a positive impact in the lives of others will help you feel more positive about your life too.
Enjoy regular doses of fun.
Do things that you enjoy, like going for dinner, watching a movie or hitting the dance floor, and do them on a regular basis. Quite simply, when we're having fun, we feel good and give our mood a positive boost.
