Celebrating Your Uniqueness

Article Pic

PEGGY O'NEILL: "Put a lid on it!" Most of us heard this command throughout our childhood mostly from parents, caregivers and teachers. In some instances, this advice was helpful, especially if we were acting out in ways that might hurt ourselves or others.

However, in other circumstances, when our response to the world around us was in excitement, wonderment, and joy many of us were taught to restrain and withhold these impulses so we didn't 'stick out', 'draw attention', or 'make a scene'.

What if this command was shouted to every flower about to bloom, every bird about to sing, or to the clouds drifting across the sky? It seems quite ludicrous when we think about applying this aphorism in nature. So, how much more ridiculous is it that we put those limitations on ourselves and our children?

To fulfill one's potential, to truly Walk Tall, requires that one blossoms into the incredible, unique individual that we were meant to be. When the seed of a tree is planted, no one knows what that tree will look like, if the branches will go right or left. So it is the same for us. No one knows what we are to become; even we don't know. The more you can trust the impulses that move deep inside of you, and be true to them, the more you will blossom into who it is that you were created to be. I call this process 'celebrating your uniqueness' and when honoured, will significantly increase the amount of success, freedom and fulfillment you experience in life.

We each have been given a gift that makes us different than other people. This uniqueness, this talent - be it artistic, scientific, athletic or bringing a smile to others - is the one thing that makes you YOU and sets you apart. It is your reason to be alive. I say, "Take the lid off!" Honour what is alive inside your true self. Give it authentic, honest expression. Be proud to be unique. Give yourself permission to be 100% you! I urge you to Walk Tall, celebrating your uniqueness!

Walking Tall Tip: "Wow! Every snowflake is unique!" Truly, the glory of nature is in its
variety! How would your life be different if you honoured your own uniqueness in the
same way you fall in love with the cherry blossoms?
