In the early part of the season my kids called me out to our garden to see this amazing large dragonfly. It was so beautiful, so I began to explore the symbology of this creature (as I usually do when something comes into my life unexpectedly) and later I found out that with blue eyes, it seemed to be quite rare. It was definitely a gift with meaning.
I seemed to be experiencing dragonflies during the summer months more often than usual and I began a different relationship with them. I had always been a little afraid of them because they moved so quickly but my fear began to dissipate when they were around me.
A few weeks later, I had another close encounter with a dragonfly. I walked out onto my deck and one was lying on the windowsill to my bedroom. When I walked next to it and it didn't move so I thought it was dead and bit of sadness came over me. When I walked back out a few moments later it was buzzing all around the deck. That felt good and I received a message inwardly as I watched it.
During this time, my son was on vacation at the beach. When he returned he was really eager to give me the present he had found for me. Guess what! It was a beautiful metal dragonfly. He said when he saw it he knew he had to get it for me. Later that week I also received a dragonfly wind sock. Dragonflies were really showing themselves to me. So a deeper understanding was in order. So Again, I went to the internet to explore some more.
So let's explore dragonfly symbology. In almost every part of the world the dragonfly symbolizes change and self-realization into a deeper understanding of the meaning of life. It calls us to look beyond the surface and look at the deeper implications and aspects of life. The dragonfly has a very short life span and usually flies for only a few months, but in that short time its agility and flight shows power and poise. It can move at an amazing 45 miles an hour, can hover like a helicopter and fly backwards like a hummingbird, flapping its wings at only 30 times per minute.
