To put it very simply, our experiences are all filed away in our subconscious and the ego reflects whatever is stored there. When a known threat is encountered, the ego sounds the alarm to protect us from real danger. But less tangible concepts, such as being rejected or disgraced, can also be interpreted as threats to be avoided. In such instances, fear can cause us to shirk all emotionally threatening situations. This is not appropriate for our emotional growth; so we must find the strength to overpower the panic within.
My creed for life is, "Face the fear to free your future." It is not an easy one to live by. At times, my inner terror has stolen my appetite and my sleep. With a major life change, it has tormented me for weeks. But I always find the strength to continue on.
I refuse to live a stagnant life. That is my commitment to me, and the source of my strength. Everyone knows fear. What distinguishes the strong is enduring such discomfort while finding a way to overcome the panic and continuing to grow.
How do you learn to spit in the dreadful face of fear? Below are five ways that get results.
1. Begin with inner stillness
Deal with that gut-wrenching response to a threat by going within yourself, to that place of calm at the centre of your being. Spend time there, remembering who you are: a child of the universe, blessed and beloved, with infinite power to overcome all obstacles.
In this stillness, removed from the ego's control, you will often discover the true source of your fear. Then you can act to resolve it. With loving strength, you can reprogram your subconscious and permanently change a deeply held belief.
2. Don't Isolate
To combat fear, I also derive vast strength from my friends. Reaching out to them is a marvellous antidote. They offer pep talks, advice and support in ways I could never create on my own.
3. Make Gratitude Your Attitude
When the fear is very great, I'll keep faith in my future by counting my blessings. I start with the roof over my head and the food in my belly. I spend a moment in gratitude for all the goodness in my life...my children, my friends, my work...and I continue to list everything and everyone that has blessed me. By the time I am done with this short exercise, the fear is gone and I feel strong and peaceful again. My perspective is corrected. I remember that I am safe; my life is blessed; and all is unfolding as it should.
4. Tap Into Universal Strength
When fear tries to devour me with its teeth of terror, I connect with my Higher Self. You can call it Universe, or God, or Spirit, or whatever name you choose. The belief in a power greater than myself helps me to know that I am not alone. This deliberate bonding replaces fear with peace. Sometimes my plea is directly answered in ways that stagger my mind with awe.
5. Commit to Your Future
Do you believe in your future? The opposite of fear is faith: a deeply held belief that you are worthy of protection; beloved and guided; and that your path will
continue. You will find your way around any obstacle to something magnificent and glorious. If you believe
that you will.
