Creating Wellness is a Full Bodied Event

"Wellness is not the absence of illness; it is the presence of happiness, purpose in life, satisfying work, joyful relationship, a healthy body and living environment." ~ Halbert Dunn

ANDREA THIEL CONNELL: Today's society is absolutely obsessed with health and fitness. I suppose it's a good thing as far as obsessions go. With rising occurrences of serious health issues and disease I wonder though if people are approaching the concept of wellness from the right perspective.

In mainstream media the focus for achieving good health leans strongly towards prescription medication, fitness, and the food guidelines set out by various government agencies. Although these may be very important aspects for basic health care for a cross section of the population, we must also understand that there is much more to achieving good health and a continuous state of wellness.

Just as there are many aspects to wellness, so are there many skills to develop that will ensure the continued growth of well being within the whole body complex. Realize that there is a synchronistic relationship happening between the layers of being at all times. Most important is coming to understand the role each layer plays in the whole body and learning to recognize as soon as possible when something has gone awry.

Meet Your 4 Body System
We are amazing bio-electro-magnetic beings. We are complex. We are actually a composite of layers of beings; specifically we are physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual beings. Each layer influences the other layers. Each layer has its own requirements to maintain health and works in never-ending energy pulsations and fluctuations to create relative stasis in the whole body complex. There is a constant exchange of information between the layers of being on an unconscious level that strive to keep the body functioning as well as possible.

Obviously, we are physical beings, flesh and bones, physiology, biology and chemistry, vital fluids and subsequent waste. Our bodies are organic machines with a phenomenal tenacity to achieve health. The organism strives to survive through the most horrific abuse, toxic poisoning, and extreme conditions. Its ideal requirements are fairly simple; pure water, nutritious food, regular exercise and fresh clean air. Though it will survive with far less than perfect care, eventual damage, neglect, genetics, may all dictate that we add various medications, supplements and other components, but all in all a fairly simple regime keeps the good ole' body moving along.

Psychologically speaking we need to keep our mental body stimulated and energized. When the mind grows sluggish and bored it will turn to diversions to stay occupied. A lazy mind though doesn't try to figure out problems but rather begins to create them by indulging in distractions, amusements, addictions, fear, worry, anger and sleep. Each of these solutions can seriously further deplete the body of its vital energy. To keep the mind healthy we need to solve problems, learn new things, search for meaning, and engage consciously in life. Developing mental prowess encourages an overall sense of strength and cope-ability leaving us feeling safe and secure.

The emotional body seeks expression in all ways but in our society we are encouraged to express ourselves in mediocrity. Exuberance, outrage, passion, hate, are discouraged, while middle of the road emotions of niceness, politeness, gentleness, tolerance, and compromise are strongly applauded. It is important to cultivate true feelings of love, compassion and joy but when honest emotions are suppressed and denied the body complex gradually begins to suffer. It will then express itself through pain, illness, chronic health issues, general malaise and discomfort. We must learn to recognize and release congested emotions with sensitive aptitude if we want to maintain health.

Finally, we have a spiritual body, the guiding force, naturally connected to all rhythms, energetic forces and universal power. When the spiritual body is weak and undeveloped we are prone to worry, anxiety, faithlessness, hopelessness and negativity in general. A strong spiritual body is grounded in faith, feels the blessing of life with gratitude in all situations and is constantly amazed at the wonders of manifesting life in all forms. Expressing gratitude, maintaining a hopeful attitude, looking for the positive will all help in building a strong spiritual body. Mindful meditation will also help you feel connected to the greater rhythms in our universe.

Maintaining harmonious health in the four body system can be challenging at times. In difficult times we require extra skill, effort and awareness to get back to an even keel. For the most part, in a properly functioning system, when one aspect is weak and not working in its power the other aspects will balance out the weakness with their respective strengths. In this way the 4 body complex thrives, ebbing and flowing, expanding, contracting, and thereby managing life.

There are times however, when certain situations threaten to tip the scale of balance too radically and too quickly for the system to easily restore itself. We can find ourselves suddenly tragically impaired. With patience, compassion and self-acceptance we can learn to recognize where we are experiencing weakness and facilitate our good health and well-being with attention and care appropriate to the needs of each layer of our being. It can help also to remember that we are never given any more than we can handle and that with every situation comes a synchronistic opportunity for healing. The opportunities will and do arise for our highest good. When we are aware and in touch with our 4-bodied system we become more open to the magical workings of the universe and can access available information easier and easier.
