Heart Meditation

…the beginning to becoming love

Man and Woman Meditating with smokey heart between them

JANICE CHRYSLER: In today’s society we hear and use the word love in a variety of contexts - everything from loving what we eat and drink, loving an activity, loving someone, we long to be loved, in love, to become love and surrounded in love.  Things and people can be lovely, loving and loved. How we act can be seen as done so in a lovingly manner. We can be loving and open to receive love. Love can be a fleeting feeling, an emotion deep within, something we crave but never seem to achieve, as we feel it for 'them' not 'us' or something we simply never think about, or at least not until we realize we are missing something in our lives. For a word to be a verb, a noun, adverb and adjective it must be very special indeed!

Perhaps the reason we use the word so much is because we long for it so greatly. We are born knowing that we require unconditional love in order to survive. Our parents and caregivers are the first humans that we rely on to provide us with this type of environment in which to grow. When it is denied, we develop a sense of worthlessness and low self-esteem but when the right seed is planted as we develop our self-love will blossom and mature. It is our right and obligation to be loved and to give love to others. It is never too late to heal old wounds and to clear our heart chakras so that it will be open to compassion and understanding of others and ourselves.

We are all created from the Divine who is unconditional love and compassion.  Our journey here on this earth is for us to expand our own experiences with these emotions and learn how to become love not just know what it is. In doing so we allow ourselves to view everything and everyone in this world differently: without judgment but rather realizing they too are on their own journey to become love.  There are times when love is hard to find, at least on the outside. Through practicing meditation, we can reconnect to this pure sense and being of love.

The following Heart Meditation will assist you in bringing your awareness to your heart chakra, where all your emotions are held. Do not be surprised if you feel overwhelmed with a rush of emotions, positive and negative, as this centre clears itself. Remember that in order to receive pure love and compassion you must be willing to let go of any negative feelings you may be harbouring in order to make room for the positive. You must also be willing to share with others the love you find within and in doing so you will reap a harvest so great you are naturally compelled to share even more.

Make yourself comfortable, either sitting or lying down, palms up by your side. Close your eyes and bring your full awareness to your breath. Take several long, slow breaths in through your nose then slowly out through your mouth. Feel your body begin to relax with every exhalation.

Now bring your awareness to your feet and imagine you have large roots growing from the soles of your feet going deeply into the earth. The deeper they go the more grounding and relaxed you feel. See them attach themselves to a large black onyx in the centre of the earth. As they do, breath up into your body the energy of the earth, exhale any stress and discomfort.  Feel yourself being grounded in the energy of the earth.

As you look up, see golden light coming down and filling your body. This is your connection to the Universe. Breathe it in.

Now, see beautiful white light surrounding your body. This is your connection to the Divine. Feel it all around you.

Place your hands on your heart chakra – in the centre of your chest. As you breath in, imagine you are breathing in this beautiful white light deep into your heart chakra.

With every breath in you are clearing your energy centre of any negative emotions.  Imagine with every exhalation you are letting go of old grievances, past hurts, forgiveness flows through you to others and to yourself. As you breath in say silently to yourself, “I am bringing love in” and when you are exhaling say, “I am letting go” and feel the negative emotions leave you. You may feel tightness in your chest as it releases any pain. You may feel a tear or two flow gently down your cheek or you may burst into a sob as this is taking place. Let it happen and set yourself free.

Continue this for as long as you wish. Then when you are finishing your meditation, imagine your whole body filled with this beautiful white light and say, “I deserve love, I give love, I am love.” Repeat this three times. Place your hands back by your side. Take one more very deep breath in and exhale with a sigh, representing your desire to put your trust in the Universe to bring love to you. Open your eyes.

Do this meditation as many times as you wish and for as long as you feel the need to be in this stillness. Soon you will uncover and discover what love truly is to you.
